Universal Music Group (or UMG) is an American global music corporation. It is considered one of the three major record companies (along with Sony Music and Warner Music Group). This is an example of an oligopoly (a market in which there is limited competition and it is controlled by a few large companies).

Universal Music Group is a subsidiary of the French media conglomerate Viviendi. A conglomerate is a major company that owns a controlling stake in a number of smaller companies.
