- The tempo dictates the editing (e.g. fast-paced songs = many cuts)
- The artist is presented by the lighting and costume and this helps to show the artists personality
- A certain tone/mood can be created through the use of different camera shots
- Footage can be made slow-motion for slower-paced songs
NARRATIVE
These type of videos follow a storyline. There are two types: fragmented and linear. A fragmented narrative is a narrative when there is one story told throughout the duration of the video, however it doesn’t always necessarily link back to the lyrics of the song. Linear narratives present stories in a logical manner by telling what happens from one point in time to the next without using flashbacks or flash-forwards and then returning to the present.
- Often has black bars at top and bottom of the screen - similar to a film so shows it is a story
- Shows either the artist or actors in a real-life situation
- Intertextuality is sometimes used
- Different locations
- Non-diegetic sound can be added in to create a realistic narrative, for example a section of dialogue of the start of the video
PERFORMANCE
These type of videos feature the artist performing. These type of videos are not as common as it is harder for the audience to engage with the artist.
- Often contain shots of the artist performing
- Lip syncing
- Location is usually a stage in front of an audience or a place where the artist/band are performing.
